SANILAC COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

Officials from the Marlette School District tell WNEM TV5 that superintendent Jeriann Patterson was placed on leave after a financial situation within the school's books came to light.

Marlette School Board President Jay Burton said about two months ago, a district secretary alerted the school administration that there was a possible budget shortfall and they might not be able to make payroll.

That information prompted an audit of the school's finances.

The district also borrowed $1.4 million from the state school aid fund as a precaution. That money has not been used yet.

Earlier this month, a new business manager was hired and on Nov. 7, Patterson was placed on paid, non-disciplinary leave. An interim superintendent will be named on Monday, Nov. 18.

Burton said they do not know what their money situation is, whether they are in the red or have a surplus, and they are waiting for the audit results. Those results are due by the end of the month.

Burton said the school district is not discussing any cuts to staff at this time. The school district has just under a thousand students.
