Freeland teachers hold informational picket

FREELAND, MI (WNEM) -

Local teachers have once again taken to the streets, letting their school board know they want a contract.

Union members held an informational picket at Freeland Elementary school Monday night.

The union says it has made proposals to the board and they're now waiting for a counter offer.

The district wants to cut 3 percent from teacher pay, and also make them pay more out of pocket expenses.

Freeland Schools Superintendent Matt Cairy said "The Freeland school board respects the job being done by our teachers. We are working toward a fair settlement with them."

Over 90 union members with the Freeland Education Association have been working under a contract that expired June 30.

The school board cut four full-time teaching positions and another part-time position back in March.

Superintendent Cairy says the next bargaining session is set for December 10.
