Richmond Officer on trial for exposing himself at Chesterfield mall

Posted: Updated:

A Richmond Police officer is expected to go on trial in Chesterfield after being accused of exposing himself.

37-year-old David Ruland faces an indecent exposure charge, which is a misdemeanor. A woman reported to police that she saw Ruland in his vehicle with his genitals exposed.

The crime allegedly happened around 10:45 a.m. on October 7 in the parking lot of Chesterfield Towne Center. Police sources tell NBC12, Ruland was not on duty nor was he in a police cruiser.

According to Richmond Police, they are cooperating with Chesterfield's investigation and conducting an internal investigation of their own.

Ruland has been with the Richmond Police Department since 2008 and is currently on administrative leave. It is unclear if Ruland is being paid.

NBC12 went to Ruland's Chesterfield home Friday night, which is not far from Chesterfield Towne Center. A woman who answered the door refused to speak with us.

Ruland's trial is expected to start at 8:30a.m.
