SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

Police in Springfield said they responded to several violent incidents over the holiday weekend. On Monday, Officer Charles Youmans said it was unusual to see so much activity at this time of year. He called the incidents isolated and said the public did not need to worry.

The violence began early Saturday morning near the Lux Ultra Lounge on Worthington Street at about 2 a.m. Three people were either slashed or stabbed during some sort of fight. The injuries were minor.

About a half hour later, police responded to the area of 79 Armory St. for reports of gunfire. Several shell casings were found, but no injuries were reported.

Later Saturday morning, police were called to a bank robbery on Sumner Avenue and an armed robbery in front of the bus station on Main Street.

On Sunday, police in Springfield arrested 30-year-old Alexis Laboy after witnesses said he was pointing a handgun at people at the corner of Worthington Street and Dwight Street. Police said he struggled with officers. He was held on several charges.

Authorities said a 50-year-old man was killed and another was hurt during a knife fight at an apartment building at 1083 Worthington St. at about 5 a.m. Sunday. Investigators said an argument that escalated to both men being stabbed. The other man was treated at Baystate Medical Center. No other information was being released.

Youmans said the street crimes unit and numerous patrols were still out on the street. He noted Springfield had the same problems as any other urban community. He said there were other communities nearby that had bigger problems than Springfield. Youmans stated the department was still working hard to keep the streets safe for residents.
