House fire in South Richmond closes Old Warwick Road

Posted: Updated:

The side of a South Richmond house has been badly damaged after an early morning fire ripped through it early Tuesday morning.

The fire happened around 1:08 a.m. in the 4500 block of Old Warwick Road.

According to the Richmond Fire Department, a man came up to the fire station on Warwick Road and alerted crews that the home was on fire. When crews arrived, they saw flames coming out of the side of the structure, and managed to put it out in twenty minutes.

Neighbors say the two people living inside hadn't been home for awhile. If they're still residents, firefighters say, then they will be displaced because of the fire. Firefighters confirm upon entering, they found a lit candle still burning.

According to the Richmond Fire Department, crews stopped at the home about a month ago as part of a fire safety canvas, but had to skip the residence because no one was home.

The cause is under investigation and it is not considered suspicious, but Richmond Fire is urging everyone to blow out their candles this holiday season before leaving the home.
