A college student spotted with guns near the University of New Haven forced university officials to tell people on campus to shelter in place on Tuesday afternoon, and now that student remains in police custody while they investigate the incident.

William Dong, 22, of Fairfield, had a high-powered rifle in his car and two more handguns on him when officials confronted him, police said.

UNH student Janna Rosenthal said she and her classmates were locked in their rooms for hours as heavily armored police swept through campus following the reports of a man with a gun.

Police eventually took Dong, a commuter student at UNH, into custody.

According to West Haven police, someone spotted him at the ShopRite plaza near campus with a rifle. Eyewitness News learned Dong had a loaded AR-15, and sources said he was hiding the rifle in the back seat of his car.

When officers nabbed Dong near campus, he had one handgun on him and another handgun in a bag.

With the lockdown lifted hours later and Dong in custody, police then turned their attention to his Fairfield home. For hours Tuesday night, investigators took photos and emerged from the home with bags of evidence.

Included in those evidence police said were numerous pistol magazines, ammunition and newspaper clippings regarding other mass shootings.

On Dong's Facebook page, friends quickly came to his defense, said it's all a misunderstanding and claimed the reason Dong carries guns is because he works for an armored truck and delivers money.

That has yet to be confirmed by police, who only listed Dong as a student on arrest paperwork.

Dong is currently being held on a $500,000 bond and is due to appear in Milford Superior Court on Wednesday. Police have charged him with illegal possession of a weapon, illegal transport of an assault weapon, breach of peace and illegal possession of a weapon in a motor vehicle.

Sources told Eyewitness News that there is no evidence Dong had any criminal intent, but according to the UNH handbook, anyone caught with a firearm on campus is subject to discipline.
