State AG still getting complaints about Miles Petroleum

Posted: Updated:
SAGINAW COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

You may remember Melissa Hostetler. We told you about her before and other disgruntled customers of Miles Petroleum.

The Saginaw County company closed its doors in September leaving many people who prepaid for fuel out thousands of dollars. Today the Attorney General's office confirms there are more than one hundred and forty complaints against Miles. A number that has grown in recent weeks.

"If people haven't filed a complaint they really should. The attorney general's office, when I spoke with them back in September, knew this was big and I'm sure they're going to find out it's even bigger," Hostetler said.

And another new development to the story is that Hostetler says she and the other former clients of Miles are considered unsecured debtors, meaning they are way down on the food chain among those trying to get their money back.

"There really weren't any attorneys interested in taking this on as a class action," Hostetler said.

We told you about company President Barry Marlow. He was apologetic when we asked him the tough questions in September.

"I'm sorry that they had to find out from a letter in the mail," Marlow said.

As for the Marlow's, they still reside here in Merrill. His wife's store, Miles Of Stitches, is open downtown. And we caught up with Mr. Marlow to ask him the tough questions over the phone. He declined any comment, only saying that he did in fact declare for bankruptcy.

That's frustrating says Hostetler. Now, with the arrival of colder air and the holidays just weeks away. She wants the company president to hear what she has to say on behalf of all her fellow customers who lost money.

"Mr. Marlow, there are a lot of people who trusted you and trusted your company, who may not be able to provide Christmas for their families now," Hostetler said.
