Mold causing Christmas tree root rot

The hunt may be on for the perfect Christmas tree, but some growers are finding that their most popular trees are dead.

Tree farmers may describe fraser firs as the ultimate Christmas tree experience, but a type of mold called phytophthora is causing root rot in large quantities of these highly sought-after trees.

The root rot problem is affecting tree farms in North Carolina, which is where some Christmas providers in the Chattahoochee Valley area get their trees from.

This type of root rot issue is not harmful to humans. The concern among tree farmers is that the trees will be hard to find next year, or that prices will sky rocket.
