Snow fell across the area Sunday night and into Monday morning and that has made for treacherous conditions on area roadways.

Freezing rain also fell in some areas and combined with the snow has left some icy patches. The fallen snow combined with gusty winds are also causing tricky conditions on roadways with open fields as the now is blowing over those roads, making for even tougher travel.

The National Weather Service says the most snow is forecast in parts of Michigan's Upper Peninsula and northern Lower Peninsula, where advisories urging caution were issued. By the time the snow wraps up Monday, a total of 3 to 8 inches is expected in Chippewa and Mackinac counties.

Lake-effect snow also is expected to continue along Lake Superior.

Michigan was not the only area of the Midwest to experience snowy weather. In Chicago, commuters had to drive through several inches of snow. The city says it has more than 200 trucks on the roads trying to clear those roads but police say they've already responded to dozens of crashes.

In Texas, an ice storm has left thousands without power and is blamed for hundreds of crashes. Arkansas and Virginia are also dealing with ice problems. The storm also forces thousands of flights nationwide to be delayed or canceled. Dallas has been the hardest hit with more than 450 flights affected. But more are expected Monday as the storm moves into the northeast.

Back in Mid-Michigan, those gusty winds are expected to veer to the southwest and pick up speed, gusting up to 30-mph Monday afternoon.

Most area received about one to two inches of snow. That's enough to cause slip and slide accidents during the morning commute, so plan on extra driving time and play it safe.
