Star basketball player killed in crash on icy roads

KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

Family and friends are mourning a gifted athlete and a bright light taken too soon.

Tributes poured in Tuesday for Rebecca "Becca" Lueke, 18, who was killed Monday morning in a crash on an icy highway in the Northland.

Lueke began playing basketball when she was in third grade. She helped lead St. Teresa's Academy to the Class 5-A district championship for the first time in 15 years. She was attending Benedictine College where she played basketball.

"She was just a leader in our school. A person that you call in and she'd be a friend to anyone who needed a friend," said Nan Bone, president of St. Teresa's.

Athletic director Mark Hough recalled Lueke's smiles, laughs and ability to keep everyone in good spirits.

Lueke began playing on the varsity basketball team as a freshman. She was one of two seniors on the team last season.

"She kind of ran the show out there and kept everybody upbeat and playing hard," Hough said. "She was a hard worker."

He said the girls are devastated by the loss, and the community is rallying to support the  family.

Lueke's younger sister plays for St. Teresa's now. The team's next game is Thursday, and school officials are waiting to hear from her about whether to go ahead with the game or postpone it.

Her parents donated their daughter's organs to save the lives of others.
