MESA, AZ (CBS5) -

A Mesa man suffered burns when a grinder he was using near gunpowder sparked a fire that destroyed the family home late Wednesday night.

The man was grinding a screwdriver in a shop area of the house when the gunpowder flashed and fire quickly consumed the room he was working in, said Mesa Fire Capt. Forrest Smith. The fire then spread to the rest of the home.

The man, who is in his 70s, suffered burns to his neck and body and was taken to the Maricopa Medical Center Burn Unit, where he was in stable condition Thursday morning, Smith said.

The fire broke out just before midnight at the house in the 1100 block of West Farmdale Avenue, near Alma School and Southern avenues, Smith said.

The man lived there with his wife and an adult son who is helping care for the couple, Smith said.

The son was able to get the parents out of the home before firefighters arrived.

The man's wife was also taken to a hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation and lacerations and was also in stable condition, Smith said.

The son was treated at the scene.

The home was called a total loss with damage estimated at $180,000, Smith said.
