Arizona ranks No. 28 in overall health

PHOENIX (CBS5) -

A new report out shows Arizona is a little less healthy than it was a year ago.

The United Health Foundation ranked Arizona 28 in overall health. Last year Arizona was No. 26.

The 2013 report lists the following strengths in Arizona:

  • Low occupational fatality rate
  • Low rate of preventable hospitalizations
  • Low rates of cancer deaths and cardiovascular deaths

Seventeen percent of Arizonans smoke. One in nine people in the state have diabetes. Twenty-six percent of Arizonans are obese and one in four people are normally physically active. The report lists these challenges in Arizona:

  • High rate of drug deaths
  • High rates of physical inactivity and obesity
  • Low high school graduation rate

The most healthy state is Hawaii.

Mississippi was deemed the least healthy.
