GENESEE COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -
America's underground is a dirty business, and experts say the number of women who are being held against their will and sold for sex is a growing problem.
"They are not in control of their lives. They cannot come and go as they please, and the money is taken by the pimp, so to speak," said Jay Kommareddi, who is on a citizen's advisory committee on human trafficking.
On Thursday, there was proof it's happening in our own back yard. Genesee Country Sheriff Robert Pickell said a Chicago-area man is accused of holding a 20-year-old local woman against her will. Twenty-seven-year-old Christopher Davis is sitting in the Genesee County jail.
"When you look at the background, Clio High School, cheerleader, the all-American girl, and here she is now. She's caught up as this indentured servant almost in this human trafficking," said Pickell.
The young woman, the victim, was paid not by money, but by drugs and just enough food to survive.
"He reintroduced her to crack cocaine, started to give it to her for free, and when she was hooked on it, he then got her to go out and start turning tricks as a prostitute, going on dates," said Pickell.
Kommareddi is on a citizen's advisory committee to shed light on human trafficking.
"When you're selling drugs, you have a finite amount. You sell the drug; it's gone. With a human being, you can keep selling that person over and over and over again, and there's an economic incentive to this, which is why it's fast becoming the second-largest criminal activity in the world," Kommareddi said.
Kommareddi said she highly doubts this dirty business stops with this one local case.
"We need to address it because children being exposed to it, or even adults, is something that shouldn't be happening in this country," said Kommareddi.
If you suspect human trafficking, there's a national hotline to report. The National Human Trafficking Hotline is (888) 373-7888.
