Cold, snowy weather gripping Michigan is being blamed for a 40-vehicle pileup on a western Michigan expressway, injuring a sheriff's deputy.
The Muskegon County sheriff's department says the chain-reaction crash happened Thursday morning on U.S. 31 in Fruitland Township, north of Detroit.
A deputy who sustained minor injuries was the only person reported hurt. Weather-related crashes killed two people Tuesday.
The National Weather Service says temperatures Thursday are well below freezing around the state, with overnight lows of minus 9 at Newberry and minus 8 at Gwinn in the Upper Peninsula. By 1 p.m., the state's hot spot for the day was 21 at Muskegon.
Forecasters say 3 to 6 inches of snow is expected by the end of Saturday across much of Michigan's southern Lower Peninsula.
The National Weather service issued weather warnings that are to start Friday night and run through much or all of Saturday, depending on the location. Hazardous driving conditions are expected, with blowing and drifting snow.
In the northern Lower Peninsula and parts of the Upper Peninsula, snow also is forecast.
Back here at home, our next low pressure system will impact the area tonight through Saturday. Several inches of measurable snowfall is expected for all of Mid Michigan by Saturday evening.
Accumulations ranging from 3-5 inches is expected area wide. However, if you are heading south of I-69 this weekend, expect 4-6 inches near Detroit. The cold weather will persist over the weekend with scattered snow on Sunday.
As a result, most of Mid-Michigan is under a winter weather advisory. Clare, Isabella, Gratiot and Clinton counties is under the advisory until 10 p.m. Saturday.
Midland, Bay, Saginaw, Shiawassee, Genesee, Tuscola, Huron, Sanilac and Lapeer counties are under the advisory until 12 a.m. Sunday morning.
