GLENDALE, AZ (CBS5) -
A family's dog was credited with saving the lives of two Glendale adults whose house was ravaged by fire Friday morning.
The frantic barking of a pit bull-Akita mix dog woke the residents about 6:30 a.m. in the area of Cactus Road and 59th Avenue, said a Glendale Fire Department spokesman.
"We don't really know how much is going to be salvageable until we go through everything," said Arlene Hayes, who lives in the home but was already at work when she got the dreaded call from one of her roommates.
"One of the dogs was crying at the door to be let out, or he smelled something or heard something or whatever it was," Hayes said.
The house had filled with smoke before the residents were able to get out with their two dogs and two cats and into the backyard, the spokesman said. There were no working smoke detectors in the home, the spokesman said.
"He's a good boy. If it wouldn't have been for him I think things would have been very ugly," Hayes said.
The residents were huddled behind a pool pump in the backyard when Glendale firefighters arrived, the spokesman said.
The fire had moved into the attic and firefighters began attacking it through the roof.
A cause had not been determined and a damage estimate was not available.
Friends of Hayes and her roommates stopped by Friday to help with the cleanup effort.
"There's no injuries, our animals are all ok," Hayes said. "Look around - this is all positive."
