GAYLORD, Mich. (AP) -

A 62-year-old man who greeted shoppers at a Meijer store in northern Michigan says he's been fired for putting out a vehicle fire in the parking lot.

David Bowers grabbed an extinguisher and put out a dashboard fire at the Gaylord store. He tells TV station WPBN-WTOM that he was dismissed last month by Meijer.

Bowers says he was told his heart was in the right place but his "brain wasn't." Meijer won't get into any specifics but it suggests that Bowers wasn't supposed to rush out to the vehicle. The Grand Rapids-based retailer says company policy on how to handle emergencies must be followed for everyone's safety.

Ken Kuzon is the customer who needed help. He says it is "ridiculous" that Bowers has been punished.
