Local kids have Christmas wishes fulfilled thanks to 'shop with a jock' event

Posted: Updated:

Christmas is only nine days away, but the season of giving was made extra special in Saginaw County on Monday night.  Santa came early for some children.

Saginaw Heritage football players, basketball players and cheerleaders acted like Santa's elves as they helped some fifth- and sixth-graders check off their Christmas lists at Meijer in Shields.

"Amazing thing to take the kids shopping and get them around to get stuff they don't have. It just feels good to bless kids," said Brian Cole, a Heritage football player.

Monday night's event is all possible thanks to former Saginaw Heritage football star and NFL player Stuart Schweigert.  His foundation, called "Stu's Crew," put together the "shop with a jock" event six years ago.  Their goal is to help children fulfill their Christmas wishes.  Each of the 12 kids got $100 to spend.

"Seeing the smiles on the kids' faces, not only the kids, but watching the Heritage kids walking around with smiles on their faces is awesome," said Schweigert.

This Christmas spirit doesn't just help put a smile on the kids' faces.

"It helps a lot of families that are unfortunate, and it helps moms and grandparents, like myself," said Clara Hicks, who brought her granddaughter to the event.

Families of some of the kids said without Schweigert's help, Christmas this year would have been limited.

"It's really nice this time of year, people need something like this to uplift them, and people need this type of cheer to uplift them, or whatnot," said Patricia Schobert, a parent of a kid who got to shop.

One of the most amazing things was how children spent their money Monday night.  Many purchased gifts for their brothers, sisters or other family members before they bought gifts for themselves.

Schweigert also gave $50 gift cards to the parents of the children who showed up at Monday night's event.

Schweigert's "Stu's Crew" foundation is always looking for additional donations to give back to the community.  If you'd like to help, CLICK HERE.
