TRW to lay off 600, close Saginaw plant

SAGINAW, MI (WNEM) -

WNEM TV5 has learned automotive parts manufacturer TRW has notified employees of impending layoffs and closure of its Saginaw facility.

Sources within the company tell TV5 the layoffs are expected to impact about 600 blue-and-white-collar workers at the plant at 2328 E. Genesee Ave. in Saginaw. That plant makes brake systems for a myriad of General Motors vehicles, including the Chevy Camaro and Buick Lacrosse.

TRW stated that the layoffs would be completed by Feb. 16 of 2014. A news release states that "assistance and support will be provided in helping prepare them for future employment at that time, subject to discussions with the hourly workers' union."

While the reasons for the layoffs have not been disclosed, TRW did terminate a $700 million brake component contract with General Motors this past September.

TRW makes electronics, steering and braking systems for the automotive industry. It operates more than 185 locations across the globe with more than 65,000 employees. Last year the company had more than $16 billion in sales supplying 40 vehicle manufactures.
