Anthony Bennett pleads guilty to killing Carnel Chamberlain, 4

Posted: Updated:

A man accused of killing a 4-year-old boy on an Indian reservation near Mount Pleasant has pleaded guilty to second-degree murder.

Anthony Bennett pleaded guilty Tuesday in Bay City federal court. He admits killing his girlfriend's son Carnel Chamberlain while alone with the boy in June 2012. He also admits burning and burying the body.

A 10-page plea deal was filed in court. Bennett is facing decades in federal prison, but he can withdraw the guilty plea if his punishment exceeds 40 years.

The killing happened on the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Reservation.

Meanwhile, Kevin Chamberlain, Carnel's uncle, issued this statement on Tuesday's guilty plea:

[The] Family is shell-shocked and didn't see a plea bargain coming. [We] had a half-belief that Anthony Bennett would continue denying his role in Carnel Chamberlain's death.

Chamberlain's family has an element of relief with Bennett's admission, but also an element of disappointment with the plea.

[We] Believe this is a step toward closure, however there will never be complete closure.

Stay with and TV5 as we learn more about Bennett's sentence.
