SAGINAW COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

A new type of snow plow is helping Saginaw County crews clean up slick roads a lot faster this winter.

The new plow known as the "Tow Plow" features a steerable trailer-mounted plow that deploys to one side.

"It allows us to plow two lanes at the same time," said (MDOT) Michigan Department of Transportation Bay Region Transportation maintenance worker Brian Jones.

The Tow Plow can also hold twice as much salt as a standard plow.

"What that's going to do is allow us to make a safer ride for motorists," said Gregg Brunner, associate region engineer.

The new Tow Plow in Saginaw County is one of only four in the state of Michigan.  MDOT says it will boost their snow plowing efforts on I-75

"We have a lot of pavement there, this will allow us to maximize our blades to clear the pavement out as quickly as possible," said Brunner.

"It will be able to get us out on the road and get the lanes cleared a lot quicker, less time for us to be in traffic," said Jones.
