Student suspended over possible threatening 'list'
CARO, MI (WNEM) -
WNEM.com was notified by a concerned parent in the Caro Community School District who said a freshman at the high school was placed on suspension for allegedly having a hit list at the school.
James Garcia, a concerned parent, said the list contained 30 names and potential actions toward the. Garcia says most parents were not notified about the incident until today.
"I'm just concerned about the safety of the kids, they should have told us right away by text messages, phone calls, or anything," said Garcia.
Tuscola County Prosecutor Mark Reene said the district became aware of the situation on Tuesday. Caro police and Reene's office were informed on Wednesday.
Reene confirmed to TV5 that the 14-year-old student had indeed been suspended and that police were investigating his written documents, which includes a "series of names."
"We are going through the information to try to understand and make sure we have the full picture," said Reene.
Superintendent of the Caro School District, Bruce Nelson, says the freshman who wrote the list has been suspended indefinitely. He also says parents of all the students on the list have been notified.
"If parents haven't been called their child wasn't on the list," said Nelson.
Nelson also says the district wants to ensure the community that they are taking the list very seriously.
"Every threat that comes to our attention we don't immediately buzz out to the community. We have to investigate what's going on and we don't want people that are threatened or that are making the threat to have their reputation's ruined." said Nelson.
The school district, police, and Prosecutor Reene encourage anyone with information about the incident to report it. At this time in their investigation police have said they do not feel their is an immediate threat to anyone.
