Triathlon set for Tucson

Posted: Updated:

Tucson, Arizona December 18, 2013 - 5430 Sports, one of the most recognizable and respected names in endurance sports event management, announced today that they will be producing the first ever open water triathlon in Tucson, AZ on Sunday, April 27, 2014.  The event will take place at Kennedy Park/Lake. This is the first ever swim event held in this beautiful water body and setting.

"Clean water flows into and fills this lake, and our initial water quality testing has shown the water to be clean and free of contaminants," says 5430 Race Director, Barry Siff.  We are thrilled to bring the 5430 TriZona Triathlon to Tucson, long considered one of Americas sports training capitals."

"I'm proud to welcome the TriZona Triathlon to our beautiful, Westside Kennedy Park," said Tucson City Councilor Regina Romero. Tucson is known internationally for our hiking and biking, and now we are adding triathlons to our sports list.  We are thrilled that Barry and his team are bringing more athletes to our mountainous, Sonoran Desert Sports City."

The race will consist of a 750 meter swim, 14.5 mile bike, and a 3.5 mile run.  It will be a USA Triathlon sanctioned event, complete with USAT Officials monitoring safety and rules compliance.  There will be a limit of 600 participants in the first year, and registration will open on January 8, 2014.

5430 Sports built their extremely popular Boulder Triathlon Series (Boulder, CO), before selling it to the World Triathlon Corporation (Ironman) in 2009.  This will mark their return to triathlon race production.  Later in 2014, they will also produce the 5430 YOLO Triathlon (You Only Live Once) in August in Aurora, CO.

5430 Sports is totally for the athletes and enhancing every racers experience. Their events are run with the utmost professionalism and passion, and that shines through in every aspect of their event delivery, says Craig Alexander, 3X Ironman World Champion.  The Australian competed several times at 5430 events in Boulder, as did most of the worlds top triathletes including Tucsons own Leanda Cave, Chrissie Wellington, and other World Champions.  However, TriZona is more aimed at the newer triathlete, as well as seasoned athletes, says Siff.  We certainly welcome the areas great professionals and elite athletes with open arms, but truly want to build this event by encouraging and motivating new people into this great sport.

5430 Sports derives its name from the altitude of its original home base in Boulder, CO (5,430); however, the organizers now live in Tucson, AZ.   For more information, visit www.5430sports.com
