MESA, AZ (CBS5) -

An 8-year-old girl is home safe and her alleged abductor behind bars after she was grabbed off her bicycle early Sunday afternoon at her Mesa apartment complex, Mesa police said.

According to witnesses, the girl was riding her bicycle outside her apartment when a stranger pulled up and snatched her, then took off down the street in a silver car.

Police said the 22-year-old suspect, Robert Curtis Milliron, held the girl in the driver's seat with him until he crashed into a brick wall in a nearby alley.

Mesa police Sgt. Tony Landato said the girl escaped the car after the crash and ran for help.

"We were very fortunate that an accident occurred," Landato said. "I don't know what could've happened, but I think our imaginations can take us to some dark places."

"If not for the keen awareness of witnesses and swift response of our patrol officers, the ending may have been tragically different," Landato said.

Police found the vehicle but Milliron was not inside. Officers said that after they set up a large perimeter search, they found a man matching the suspect's description and took him into custody.

Mesa police said Milliron lives at a nearby apartment complex and the crashed car was registered in his name.

Landato said Milliron told officers he was lonely and looking for companionship. He said Milliron had no significant criminal history.

He was booked into jail on charges of felony kidnapping, unlawful imprisonment, aggravated assault and hit-and-run.
