SAGINAW TOWNSHIP, MI (WNEM) -

Country Sampler owner Connie Reppuhm is one happy business owner.

The Saginaw Township store has worked with local authorities for years to reduce crime in the area and that's why Reppuhm is thrilled with Tuesday's launch of the police department's new online crime map.

"I'm very much in favor of it. I think it's a great idea," said Reppuhm. "Even though we don't have a large amount of crime in the township, it shows that we are actively out there trying to take a bite out of it."

The website will cost the police department about $700 per year, but Chief Donald Pussehl says that's a small price to pay for a tool that will help improve crime fighting in the community.

"It's a relatively inexpensive cost, which I believe will be very beneficial to citizens and to business owners so that they can see what's going on in their neighborhoods," Pussehl said.

Anyone can use the map to view up-to-date criminal activity occurring within the township. Residents will get detailed information on anything from assaults, fires, robberies, murders and narcotics. Pussehl is optimistic people will see the crime data and call in tips. He's calling the new site an "online neighborhood watch."

"We enjoy the partnership that we have with our citizens and we would encourage continuing that partnership, and this crime map is another way of doing that," Pussehl said

Meanwhile, Reppuhm believes the site will be a huge success, saying the police do a lot to fight and prevent crime. She tells TV5 the crime map serves as another example of how the community and law enforcement can work together to make a difference.

"I think it's going to show the public that our township is really out there fighting for us everyday to keep us safe," Reppuhm said.
