Lakewood Ranch couple has trouble using new insurance

LAKEWOOD RANCH, FL (WFLA) - After signing up for new insurance policies through healthcare.gov, some customers are running into challenges in using their new coverage.

In Lakewood Ranch, Judith Berlow says an appointment for treatment for an osteoporosis condition was canceled because she didn't yet have an insurance policy number or card to give the doctor's office.

"They called me and said, ‘We'll have to reschedule this for a later date when you have the necessary documents,'" Berlow said.

The Berlows had already signed up for a plan and paid a premium of more than $1,600, with coverage scheduled to begin Jan. 1. They've been dealing with a number of issues connected to their application, including a double-billing issue for which they're still waiting for a refund.

A Florida Blue spokesman declined an interview but said Wednesday morning that the Berlow situation had been resolved. The couple said it was not resolved when a reporter interviewed them shortly after that, but a few hours later, said they had gotten a phone call from a Florida Blue representative saying their information had been put into the system and their cards could be printed out.

The Berlows have since received temporary cards and rescheduled that doctor's appointment.

News Channel 8 has received several other inquiries from new policyholders, concerned about not receiving cards to show at pharmacies or doctor's offices to prove they have insurance.

At Tampa General Hospital, employees knew patients likely would not have cards yet, and have been verifying insurance coverage by phone. That system has been working fine, a TGH spokesman said.

Florida Blue has said those who signed up for coverage should receive the cards by January 15.

However, Florida Blue has also said some applications filed in October were lost. Those who believe they are among those applicants can contact Florida Blue with their application number.
