Richmond man accused of running drug operation with 1-year-old in the home

A Richmond man is facing serious charges. 23 year old Kyron Benjamin is accused of growing and selling marijuana with a young toddler in the home.

The 911 call came in as a domestic case. The caller reported hearing a child crying and a man and woman arguing.

"We don't want to do this the hard way," recalls Officer Gary Venable. "We want to do this the easy way. Just open the door."

Police say the suspect initially refused, and so officers called Sgt. James Hale to the busy stretch along the 2800 block of Broad Rock Boulevard.

"Our main concern was the child," said Sgt. Hale.

23-year-old Kyron Benjamin was arrested. Benjamin is charged with possession of marijuana with intent to distribute.

"That basically is child neglect," said Officer Venable.

Police say the suspect ran into the back bedroom and into the closet. Officers found a gun and more than a pound of marijuana inside the closet. They also say they found $8,000 in cash stashed in shoes.

"Guns and drugs and children just don't mix," said Sgt. Hale.

Police snapped photos of the drugs. Officers say the strong odor of marijuana slapped them in the face.

"It was really strong," said Officer Julio Rodriguez. "It was unbelievable. I have never been to an apartment with it that strong."

Police say the arrest was an 8 hour ordeal. Officers have notified child protective services.
