Driver dies and passenger is critically injured in Wickliffe crash

One person is dead and another is critically injured after their vehicle slammed into a tree in Wickliffe on Thursday night.

Wickliffe Officers say that at 11:52 p.m. on January 16, the driver of white 2002 Buick four-door struck a tree on the right side of the roadway in the 2200 block of East 290th Street.

The driver, 40-year-old Timothy J. Roper and his passenger were taken to Lake West Hospital.  Roper of Wickliffe, was pronounced dead in the emergency room.

The passenger identified as Dominick Gromek, 35, of Wickliffe, was transferred by helicopter to Akron General Hospital with critical injuries.

Alcohol is suspected to have played a role in the crash.

The incident but is still under investigation and a definitive ruling will be made once toxicology results are known.
