PLANT CITY, FL (WFLA) - Plant City's police chief is on paid leave, but city officials are being quiet about the reason.

Steven Singletary has served as Plant City Chief of Police since December of 2012.

Tuesday, Plant City Manager Greg Horwedel confirmed Singletary is now on a paid suspension from the department.

"Today we have opened up a formal investigation regarding some allegations into Chief Singletary's violation of city policy, because it's an active and ongoing investigation. I'm not going to be able to get into much detail, other than to say the investigation is ongoing,” said Horwedel.

Horwedel says a tip came in from a citizen about Singletary.  Former Plant City Police Chief Bill McDaniel is now in charge of the investigation into what policy violation may have occurred.

"I hope to have it wrapped up fairly shortly. We have no interest in dragging this out, either for the cities sake or Chief Singletary's sake,” said Horwedel.

Horwedel says he has met with Singletary about the allegations.

"I think it's fair to say he's disappointed … but given the nature of the allegation and that we are all public servants and held to a higher standard, it's important for us to make sure any allegations of that sort are fully investigated and that we do a fair job of identifying what the problems were and what disciplinary actions needed to be taken,” said Horwedel.

Plant City Councilman Michael Sparkman says he learned about the suspension after returning from a trip out of town.

"I'm really disappointed.  I was shocked and dismayed. I've had a few sleepless nights because I know the family, I know the Chief's family and his wife and kids and go to church with them and those type things, and was really dismayed that this has occurred,” said Sparkman.

Horwedel says he expects the investigation to take about 2 weeks.
