MSP warns of phone scammers posing as 'drug agents'
ISABELLA COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -
Authorities in Mid-Michigan are warning citizens about a telephone scam that's making the rounds.
Michigan State Police troopers at the Mt. Pleasant post were notified of a phone scam where citizens received telephone calls where the caller identified themselves as drug agents.
The caller notified the resident that there are drug agents with an arrest warrant on their way to their house to arrest them on drug charges. The caller mentioned fines, as much as $100,000.
Troopers said caller ID indicated that the calls are originating, or are given the appearance of originating, out of the state of Texas, and that it appears that the caller was trying to scam the resident out of money.
Troopers said they want to make it clear that proper Law Enforcement will NOT call and ask for money.
Investigators said an Internet search of the telephone number listed many similar bogus calls. If you receive similar calls, HANG UP, do not give out personal information, credit card or bank information.
