Defense attorney says Tampa Police D.U.I. unit needed change

TAMPA, FL (WFLA) -

A criminal defense attorney says change was needed in the Tampa Police D.U.I. Unit.

Thursday Tampa Police Chief Jane Castor announced the results of a three month review of the D.U.I. Squad.

The review team took a comprehensives look at 70 D.U.I. Cases.

The review found repetitive or "canned language" contained in police reports by the unit.

Tampa defense attorney Jason Rogozinski says he sees this all the time.

"The reports, the wording, the language is identical. I mean, they may as well be pre-printed." said Rogozinski.

The attorney says while the facts of each case are different, the language used in arrest reports is not.

"The reports say the same thing. I detected an odor of alcoholic beverage, slurred speech, bloodshot eyes. It says it every time.", said Rogozinski.

Chief Castor called the review and changes made a "rebooting" of the D.U.I. Unit.

Rogozinski says that will be good for everyone involved.

"My position is, if you're going to arrest somebody for that, give us the entire picture.", said Rogozinski.
