Mid-Michigan football star passes away

Posted: Updated:

He was an All-American football star at his Mid-Michigan high school, to college and eventually the National Football League.

Family, friends and former teammates are mourning the loss of Bay City native Dennis Wirgowski.

Wirgowski died over the weekend. He was 66 years old.

Wirgowski was a high school all-American at Bay City Central High School, where he led the team to a state title in 1965.

He then went on to play college football at the University of Purdue before being drafted by what was then known as the Boston Patriots.

Wirgowski played 4 seasons in the NFL before returning to Bay City.

His brother Nigel told TV5 that on the field, Dennis had the complete package of size, strength and speed, but off the field he was a different guy.

Nigel says football meant a great deal to Dennis even after his playing days were over. He loved to return to Bay City Central to watch his old team play.

Wirgowski's funeral will be this Thursday at 10 a.m. at Saint Anne Church in Linwood.
