Local man's wheelchair stolen, now he's asking for help

GENESEE COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

A wheelchair has played the role of Thomas Beck's legs almost since he was born.

"If I don't have that chair, that's like me hacking somebody's legs off. You aren't getting around unless you got one," said Beck.

In fact, a wheel chair is all he's known. At just a few days old, Beck underwent open heart surgery. But the procedure wasn't smooth. It caused him to lose the use of his legs and become a paraplegic. He depended on his wheel chair to get around. But on Sunday, his mode of transportation went missing.

"When I came out to get into my chair, it was gone," said Beck. "This isn't a toy, this is how I get around. It's my livelihood, if I don't have it, I don't get around," said Beck.

He always left the wheel chair outside of his home at the end of his stairs because it was too big to bring inside his home. Now with it gone, he's calling for help.

"It's how he gets around, it's his legs, and when they stole the wheelchair, they stole Thomas' legs," said Pastor Keith O'Neal of the Good Samaritan Network in Flint.

O'Neal is answering the call. He's reaching out to other Mid-Michigan people to help get Beck a chair.

"We need to find a wheelchair that helps Thomas get to where he needs to get, even in the winter time," said O'Neal.

Beck says that's all he wants. This Friday, he turns 34, and said he'd love to be mobile for his birthday.

"I'd like to have one by my birthday because my sister has offered to take me with her to an arcade, and it'd be nice to get out of the house, and do something fun," said Beck.

Beck said that chair could also help him get back to being self-sufficient, something he said he takes pride in.
