Snyder to detail tax relief, spending proposals

LANSING, Mich. (AP) -

Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder is preparing to detail tax relief and spending plans in his next proposed state budget.

A key feature of the Republican governor's Wednesday presentation to lawmakers will be some sort of short-term tax cut for low- to moderate-income residents.

Snyder's also planning a 6 percent funding increase for Michigan's public universities. Their funding is down a third from just seven years ago and was cut significantly by Snyder three years ago.

He's expected to propose extra money for road and bridge maintenance thanks in part to a nearly $1 billion surplus over three years.

Democrats say Snyder's proposed 3 percent funding boost for K-12 schools is "fuzzy math" and residents whose taxes went up as part of a business tax cut won't be made whole.
