Cold & snowy winter -- but are we breaking any records?

Posted: Updated:

We are in the middle of winter, and we have certainly had our share of cold and snow. Let's take a look at where we stack up so far this season.

Starting with the cold. December, January, and now the start of February have all experienced below average temperatures. The average temperature so far in the winter of 2013-2014 at MBS is 19.1 degrees. This number puts this season at the 8th coldest winter on record. Keep in mind that we still have more winter to go, so MBS could climb to an even colder spot in the top 10.

In Flint, FNT has recorded an average temperature of 20.0 degrees so far this winter. This puts Flint on track to have the 9th coldest winter on record.

We should also talk about the number of days we've had with below zero temperatures. At MBS, 10 days have been recorded where the temperature fell below zero. The average for the entire season is 6 to 7 days. At FNT, there have been 15 recorded below zero days, already well above the average of 7 to 8 days.

And now for the snow. Average snowfall for the entire season at MBS is 45.5 inches. There has already been 39.7 inches recorded as of February 4th. We'll have to add the snow we received this morning to that number, which will put us pretty close to the seasonal average.

FNT has recorded A LOT of snow so far this winter. The average for the season is 47.4 inches. We have easily surpassed that with a recording of 57.9 inches as of February 4th. This puts FNT in the running for a spot in the top 20 of the snowiest winters. Right now, this winter ranks 16thsnowiest.

As stated above, there is time left in the season to get more snow and move up in the rankings.
