Saginaw school board delays closure decision

SAGINAW, MI (WNEM) -

The Saginaw public school district was expected to vote Wednesday night on a plan that would close one of the city's high schools and lay off dozens of employees.

That vote has now been delayed after intense reaction from the community. But the school still remains on a strict timetable when it comes to their budget.

The state has imposed a Monday deadline for the district to make the tough decisions necessary to get their budget on track.

A 4.8 million dollar deficit looms in the district. As possible solutions are presented including the possibility of shutting down Saginaw High, emotions are running high.

Under the proposed plan, Saginaw High students would travel to Arthur Hill High School, along with the closure of a couple other schools.

And that's not the most popular move.

Tradition and pride were used often as parents addressed the board, pleading for another way.

The board plans to make a decision at a special board meeting on Saturday. That meeting will begin at 12 p.m. at Saginaw High School.
