AUBURN HILLS, MI (WNEM) – The Detroit Pistons announced today that head coach Maurice Cheeks has been relieved of his head coaching duties, just 50 games into his first season in the position.

The Pistons recorded a 21-29 record over those 50 games, including back-to-back victories this weekend.

In a press release from the team, President of Basketball Operations Joe Dumars said, "This was a difficult decision for the organization to make but we needed to make a change. We have great respect for Maurice and appreciate his hard work."

Pistons owner Tom Gores added to that, saying "I respect and appreciate Maurice Cheeks and thank him for his efforts; we just require a different approach."

No word yet on who might replace Cheeks.
