New vegetarian menu at Phoenix jail has some inmates on strike

Posted: Updated:
PHOENIX (CBS5) -

Some inmates at Estrella Jail in Phoenix don't like Sheriff Joe Arpaio's new vegetarian menu so they reportedly started a hunger strike early this week and the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office said the women's effort is growing.

Seven inmates complained on Monday about the new all vegetarian, all soy-based food that Arpaio launched and now nearly an entire pod of women are on the hunger strike, according to MCSO.

The sheriff said they cannot force the women, who are in the jail awaiting trial, to eat.

Arpaio plans to hold a news conference at 3 p.m. Wednesday to address the strike.
