Central VA roads covered with snow/ice, more on the way

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

A major winter storm which dropped several inches of snow and ice across much of Central Virginia is expected to drop several more inches Thursday.

People across the Metro Richmond area woke to find their cars covered in a thick layer of snow and ice, as the storm transitioned from heavy flakes to freezing rain overnight.

More than 3,000 customers were without power early Thursday, with the largest number being Dominion customers in the metro Richmond/Tri-Cities area.

Widespread travel delays were reported at Richmond International Airport and at airports all across the southeast.

The First Warning Weather team is forecasting an additional 1-3" of snow falling across Central Virginia Thursday afternoon.

Several accidents were reported across metro Richmond, as well, as the snow and ice made for dangerous conditions.

The Commonwealth remains under a state of emergency and the governor has asked Virginians to stay off the roads, if at all possible.
