A co-defendant says a man who recently escaped from a Michigan prison is innocent in the 1993 quadruple-killing that put them both behind bars for life.

Michael Elliot got away from the Ionia Correctional Facility for 24 hours earlier this month. The 40-year-old was arrested in northwestern Indiana after authorities say he stole a vehicle in Ionia with a woman inside.

Charles Treece tells WOOD-TV he pulled the trigger and Elliot played no part in the Gladwin County slayings. Treece spoke to the Grand Rapids station over the phone Wednesday from the Alger Correctional Facility in the Upper Peninsula.

According to Treece, Elliot was found guilty because two other co-defendants used him as a scapegoat. Treece says he wants Elliot's name to be cleared.
