Swingshift & the Stars event raises $21K for charity

Posted: Updated:

Over 350 people gathered at the Scottish Rite Masonic Center on Feb. 14, 2014 to show some love to the six fabulous charities and their star dance teams at the first SwingShift and the Stars Dance-Off for Charity event in the Great Lakes Bay Region.

The six star dance teams danced their way to raise $21,000 for their charities from a very generous GLBR community.

Just for Kids, Maier & Associates Charitable Foundation, represented by Lisa Rechsteiner and Lon Wackerle raised over $7,000 to top the donation leader board. The couple ended up in third place in the competition.

Girls on the Run raised over $5,800 with the help of the "star" power of John Spreeman and Delores Garrett. The pair placed second in the competition.

The Children's Dyslexia Center raised just over $3,500 and their star dance team of Larry White and Sherri Green won the $2,000 Achievement Award for earning the highest overall judges scores combined with audience votes, bringing their total for the evening to more than $5,500.

Royal Family Kids raised $1,300 with their dance team of David Doyle and Hope Histed, and Joline Stebbins and Trevor Barkiewicz helped Rescue Ministries of Mid-Michigan raise over $575. The Daiper Alliance with ambassadors Mike Weinert and Theresa Baker raised more than $550.

The judges for the competition, Tami Conrad of WNEM, Gary Hugo of Gary Hugo and Son's Construction, Lucy Talley of Hearst Newspapers, and the Midland Daily News had a tough job. Emcees Sarah Jaeger of WNEM and Art Lewis of Next Media Group did a great job guiding the audience and participants through the busy evening.

The next three fundraising events will also be held at the Scottish Rite Masonic Center in Bay City on March 14, April 11 and May 2. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the show begins at 7:15 p.m. Tickets starts at $20 (not including service fees) and are available at www.swingshiftandthestars-glbr.com or by calling 231-941-8082. The public can also donate to the charities by using the links at the website.
