Saginaw urges residents to clear drains before warm-up

Posted: Updated:

The winter of 2014 is already one to remember, and the experiences are likely far from over, especially as the weather warms up over the next couple of days.

"It's going to melt, and it's gotta drain, and if it doesn't drain, you're going to have flooding in the streets and it's going to make it messy," said Andrea Williams.

The snow will turn to water looking for a place to flow, but in many cases the drains where the water needs to go are jammed up with ice and snow.

That is why Saginaw Mayor Dennis Browning is calling on residents to help out.

"As it freezes and thaws, we try to get rid of as much as we can, and then move it on," said Browning.

On Tuesday night he put a little bit of muscle to his word as he demonstrated with a neighbor of his on how to clear the drains.  He used an ice chipper and shovel to clear the snow and ice away from the one in his neighborhood.  He said this is the best way to ensure the water has somewhere to go.

"The people in the neighborhoods are going to be the ones that make it happen, got to get out, make sure the drains are clear, whatnot, and everything should drain," said Saginaw resident Marvin Pullom.

Obviously because of the thick snow and ice, there will be some instances where it will be tough to bust through to the drain.  Saginaw city leaders tell TV5 to keep a close eye on those areas, and if they start flooding out, you should report the problems to the city by calling 989-759-1612.
