SPARTANBURG, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Eugene Hunter Jr. said he got quite a scare when his pigs dug up a grenade while he was feeding them Tuesday night.

"I looked down and saw the grenade," Hunter said. "I was stunned."

Hunter said he immediately backed away from the grenade and called 911.

Lt. Ashley Harris with the Spartanburg County Sheriff's responded, along with the bomb squad, to the property on Jones Road in Enoree.

"This is a Mark II grenade used in World War II" Harris said.

Harris said the grenade was used for training and did not contain explosives or a blasting cap. Initially Harris said it was hard to determine if the grenade was live because it was covered in dirt and halfway buried.

Harris said it's not uncommon for people to find old explosives, especially around the Camp Croft area because it used to be used for military training, but the way this one was found was certainly a first.

"Lots of people used to bring these back as souvenirs from their time in the military," Harris said. "We recover these from attics all across Spartanburg County."

Harris said deputies treat each explosive call with the utmost caution and recommends anyone who finds an old explosive stay away and call 911.

Hunter said he will treat any future discoveries by his pigs as carefully as he did this one.

"Makes me nervous," Hunter said. "I don't know if I go and feed the pigs maybe I'll step on one."
