Saginaw schools facing Monday deadline

SAGINAW, MI (WNEM) -

The Saginaw school district faces a Monday afternoon deadline to submit more information to the state for the district's deficit elimination plan.

The school district missed a February 21 deadline to submit their plan to the state. The district did submit the plan on Saturday and the state accepted the plan.

However, the state says the district still needs to submit supporting information and budgetary documents before the plan can be approved.

The district faces a 3 p.m. deadline Monday afternoon.

Last week, school leaders went to Lansing to present their latest plan. It included staff layoffs and the closing of three schools.

The state says the meeting with the district went well, but that some formatting and budgetary information needs to be revised on the document.

"Saginaw was missing a couple bits of budgetary information that officials wanted to see.  It was substantial enough that we need to see it in order to give a better picture to us to make a decision on their revised plan," said Bill Disessa, spokesman for the Michigan Department of Education.
