ISABELLA COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

Authorities have finally reopened a stretch of US-127 in Isabella County following a multi-car pile-up that forced authorities to temporarily shut down both the north-and-southbound lanes.

Isabella County Sheriff Leo Mioduszewski told TV5 the crash involved between 30 and 40 cars along a stretch of US-127 between Alma and Mount Pleasant. The road reopened at 5:30 p.m. on Friday.

Authorities say the crashes weren't a single concentration of 40 vehicles, but a number of smaller accidents along the same stretch of road. The Michigan State Police stated that the crashes were due to a combination of blowing snow and icy roads.

Mioduszewski said five people were taken to area hospitals, and one person has a possible head injury. Authorities were forced to drain a semi-truck's diesel fuel tanks before pulling it from the road.

Michigan State Police and local police, as well as a fire truck, were on the scene for nearly five hours, which stretched over several hundred yards.
