SAGINAW, MI (WNEM) -

Saginaw Police officers were dispatched Thursday on a report of a 6-year-old boy who was unresponsive.

The boy was found at a home in the 1800 block of Ames around 12:50 p.m.

Once on the scene, officers said the child appeared to have burns on his body and trauma to his head.

After further investigation by the Major Crimes Unit, consisting of detectives from the Michigan State Police and Saginaw Police Department, detectives said they identified a person of interest.

That person, a 39-year-old man from Saginaw, was interviewed and subsequently arrested and charged with first-degree child abuse. The suspect is currently lodged at the Saginaw Jail.

Charges later filed against the man include torture and assault with intent to murder.

The child is listed in critical condition at an area hospital.

Authorities said their investigation is ongoing.
