FDA approved cheek filler now an option Mid-Michigan

Aging is a part of life, but for Angie Yaworski, the physical signs of aging were something she would like to do without.

"I looked in the mirror one day and noticed that I looked older than what I feel inside. And, you know, my skin, my face was starting to get a little droopy, " says Yaworski. "You look through old pictures, you know, back in, you know, your 20s, and I'd like to see that again."

Angie wanted to look as young as she felt. She started to look into different non-surgical skin care options that would give her face a lift. What she found was a non-invasive FDA approved cheek filler, called Juvederm Voluma XC.

"I've seen two people that have had it done with Dr. Sofer. I liked the results, it looked very natural, it wasn't Hollywood looking, and it was an immediate result. So I decided to go ahead and do it."

We lose volume in our cheeks as we get older. Now, Mid-Michigan has an FDA approved treatment that gives patients a more youthful appearance, in a matter of minutes.

Dr. Julie Sofer is a plastic and reconstructive surgeon with McLaren Bay. She is also one of the first in the Tri-Cities to offer Voluma, a filler that is designed to add volume when injected into the cheek area. It is different than Botox, which is a muscle relaxer for wrinkle reduction.

"It's the first FDA approved filler in the US. And it's great for Mid-Michigan because we are a little bit different compared to Hollywood. We still want to have a youthful and refreshed look without going through the invasive surgery."

Dr. Sofer says patients will come in, not knowing exactly what is giving them an aged look. Sometimes, the solution lies in the fat pads of our cheeks, which tend to descend with age.

"We have natural fat pads - and we just lift it for them and it makes them look less tired, they don't have the sagging under their eyes, the dark hollowing areas."

The procedure itself is relatively painless, involving a few injections. There is virtually no downtime. Doctors say the most common side effects are pain at the injection site, and bruising.

"They see the results right away, so they're involved during the whole procedure to tell me when is enough, if it's too much, if it's not enough. Most people are very happy with it."

For the small percentage of people who change their mind after the procedure, it's re-assuring to know that it is reversible – another injection will completely dissolve the filler.

Angie, however, loves her results!

"The injections really did not hurt, they just felt a little pinch. It doesn't feel heavy, or anything like that. I can't feel, you can't feel it in there. Even when I smile, it feels natural."

She says she loves the immediate result, and recommends it to anyone who is looking for a non-surgical alternative to a cheek or face lift.
