Many still in cold after water main break in Bay City

Posted: Updated:
BAY CITY, MI (WNEM) -

Many customers on Bay City's west side remain without heat due to a water main break near the intersection of Dean and Jane streets last Thursday.

About 50 customers are still in the dark.

Consumers Energy crews are working to restore the natural gas. The incident happened around 9 p.m. Thursday night.

Some customers may have to wait until Tuesday to turn their furnaces back on. Utility crews repaired the gas line but the water froze in some of service lines to the homes.

Consumers Energy tells TV5 that crews are working around the clock to replace the lines.

Water originally washed away the foundation of the gas main in the area and the gas main cracked causing water to seep into the gas line.

Officials were forced to shut off power to residents in the area affected. The power is off to those customers while crews work to clear the water out of the gas main.

In the meantime, affected customers can call 989-791-5775.

TV5 will continue to follow this story and will provide updates as new information is learned.
