FREMONT, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Three people are dead, another injured, after an early Sunday morning shooting at a Fremont bar.

The victims are Jose "Andy" Chavez, an off-duty Elmore Police officer, bartender Ramiro Sanchez, and customer Daniel Ramirez.

Another customer, Ramiro Arreola, was wounded and hospitalized for treatment.

His condition is not known.

All the flags in Elmore are flying at half staff honoring the memory of 26-year-old Officer Chavez.

He's been on the force for two years, is married and has two children.

"He was a super nice guy. Very well liked in the area. I just can't understand it. Doesn't make much sense at all," said Elmore resident Melinda Chevalier.

Officer Chavez and the others were inside the Last Call Bar in Fremont.

The gunman is on the loose and is being pursued by U.S. Marshalls.

He's described as short and Hispanic.

"He had been in that bar for some time and there was an altercation of some kind and it went horribly bad and caused this tragedy," said Fremont Police Chief Timothy Wiersma.

Outside the bar, a memorial of flowers and balloons continues to grow for the victims.

Nathaniel Dickman brought flowers for his friend Ramiro Sanchez, the slain bartender.

Mr. Dickman lives above the bar and was in bed when he heard gunshots.

"I heard a lot of frantic people screaming. It was just chaos. I didn't know if it was coming up through my floor. I didn't get up for a few minutes. When I did, it was complete chaos, people crying outside, very sad," said Mr. Dickman.

Fremont Police are questioning patrons in the bar.

Surveillance tape is also being examined that may reveal a motive and provide a good look at the suspect.

"It's a helluva shame and I hope they catch whoever did it," said Ms. Chevalier.

Meanwhile, the Elmore Police Department has released a statement calling Officer Chavez "an exemplary officer in good standing with the department."
