An alert neighbor turned into a hero in a matter of seconds when flames and smoke began to spread throughout his elderly neighbor's home.
The man who got her to safety even ran back into the burning house.
Thomas Poineau didn't even have time put his shoes on, before racing to the home next door. He says all he was thinking about was that his 85-year-old neighbor's home was on fire and he knew she was inside.
"I ran straight through the house and told my mom to call 911," says Poineau.
The fire started around 7:30 p.m. Sunday evening.
Thomas says once he got his neighbor out and made sure she was okay, he ran back in to try to find her dog. He says he didn't get very far.
"It was hot and filled with smoke. Normally the dog would have been barking and coming out, I think it was already overcome by smoke," says Poineau.
Officials weren't able to save the dog. The elderly neighbor is okay and is staying with relatives. Poineau says he has always tried to look out for his neighbor of more than twenty years. He says doesn't want to be called a hero, he was just doing the right thing.
"We always help her out. Shovel her sidewalk and stuff like that. You would always help your neighbor, pretty much everybody's a hero," says Poineau.
The cause of the fire is under investigation. However, the neighbor says Ms. Gary was cooking when the fire happened.
