Charge filed after 3-year-old found wandering Petersburg streets

Posted: Updated:

Petersburg police say a 21-year-old Chesterfield resident has been charged in connection with a 3-year-old found wandering Monday morning.

Police will not release the name of the suspect, citing the ongoing investigation by the Department of Social Services. However, they say the person dropped Darnell off at his home but didn't make sure he made it safely inside.

The Chesterfield resident now faces one charge of contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

A city worker found the boy wandering around 9:30 a.m. Monday near the intersection of Washington Street and Guarantee Street. The worker stopped the child, but he was unable to give any information except his name.

Two hours later, police sent out Darnell's picture to the media, and 911 calls came flooding in with how to find his mom.

Darnell is back with his mother. Darnell's family is being evaluated, but police have come to the point where they feel comfortable enough sending him back home.
